In fact, statistics show that a lower percentage of traffic stops and subsequent vehicle searches involving African American males turn up hits on contraband than such stops on white males. This phenomenon is likely the result of more African American males being stopped and searched than white males. Hypothetically consider ten African American males who are stopped in predominantly white neighborhoods. Of those ten, 2 are found to possess contraband; the result is a 20% hit rate. Now consider 2 white males stopped in predominantly black neighborhoods. Of those 2, one is found to possess contraband; the result in this case is a 50% hit rate. Given that in any average neighborhood fewer white males are stopped by police than black males, these numbers are entirely possible. The point is that one must be careful to critically review statistics in order to fully understand what is being presented (Lundman, 2004).
Another problem with statistics is that African American males tend to underreport the number of stops and the number of hits. If this is true, then the slightly higher stop and search rates of African American males compared to white citizens is low; the actual number of stops and searches performed against African American males could be much higher than statistics show. Though statistics show a slightly higher hit rate for white males than African American males, this may also be a function of underreporting by African Americans (Lundman, 2004).
Racial Profiling in the News
Racial profiling was recently in the limelight when Timothy Thomas, an unarmed 19 year-old black man in Cincinnati, Ohio, was shot to death by Officer Steve Roach. Mr. Thomas was wanted for 14 minor traffic violations which had occurred over the past several days. Upon recognizing an off-duty police officer who was aware of Mr. Thomas’s wanted status, Mr. Thomas started to run. Officer Roach was on duty; he gave chase, observed Mr. Thomas climb a fence and then make a motion to his waist presumably in an effort to brandish a weapon (Carrillo, 2001). Timothy Thomas was shot to death on Saturday, April 7, 2001 (Vaccariello, 2006).
Following the shooting death of Timothy Thomas, the city of Cincinnati fell into unrest and its citizens erupted into demonstrations and riots. For most of the rioters, Timothy Thomas was not a person familiar to them; however, the death of yet another unarmed black man was very fam ...
