The equality of men and women is contained in the Guru Granth Sahib is best summed up in one passage of the Granth written by Guru Nanak Dev as:<br>We are born of woman, we are conceived in the womb of woman, we are engaged and married to woman. We make friendship with woman and the lineage continued because of woman. When one woman dies, we take another one, we are bound with the world through woman. Why should we talk ill of her, who gives birth to kings? The woman is born from woman; there is none without her. Only the One True Lord is without woman. ("Women in Sikhism," 1998, p.1, par. 1). <br> Like most major religions of the world, Sikhism follows strict rules of behavior in their daily lives and when dealing with others. Sikhs believe there are five moral evils that are the roots of sin and eight virtues to overcome them. One of the core beliefs of the Sikh religion is family and community service; one of the five moral evils is lust, sex outside of marriage is strictly forbidden. Second of the evils is anger and hatred, third comes greed; fourth is jealousy of anothers material possessions or personal relationships and lastly is false pride.<br> The eight virtues to combat evil are wisdom, truthful living, justice, temperance, patience, courage, humility and contentment. By living a virtuous life based on the eight virtues (commandments) a person will become wise enough to treat another as they want to be treated. Living honestly and truthfully with respect for the rights of all others families, religions, property and other belongings even those belonging to an enemy will bring a person closer to God. Showing self control learned through meditation and prayer along with patience banishes false pride and greed. Courage, humility and contentment give the Sikh the strength to respect others while standing up against the evils of others.
