Since it is a predominantly white community, I will show the attitude of one of my coworkers that is also white. His story is that a year ago he lost the chance to be hired at his favorite company. The reason he explained was that the company hired employees based on the racial equity principle. He was frustrated that his experiences and talent was ignored that way. After that, my coworker would never agree with the words “institutional racism”. He never feels guilty for the condition of people of other race in the community. Even though he sees that a problem still persists, he is never willing to make a productive action.
Here I showed racial experiences from a “white” point of view. It is gloomy that White supremacy persists in the local media that leads to misleading and increased stereotyping. In my opinion the press gets in the way of society solving racial problems.
Racial interactions from the point of view of other races are not only different, but also sadder. On the other side of the brick walls, the environment is totally different. It’s funny to look at and compare when you’re driving by both communities. The Mexican community on the other side of the wall doesn’t like us because the military housing is like the suburbs, and then right next door you have all the Mexicans living in a trailer park. They throw things over the fence all the time, which I think is really childish and immature, especially when we have our children playing in the area all the time. It’s mostly their trash or old tires that they just throw over the wall; they even throw over dirty diapers. I know they’re mad because our housing is better, but I think that the soldiers and their families deserve it, it’s not unfair to me at all. I
Page Three
don’t know why the Mexican trailer park can’t understand that. All they see is that we have central air and they don’t.
The leaders in my community treat everyone as equals. We have the housing office on base that controls all the military communities and then we have a person on our street, the community leader. We go to him if there are any issues within the neighborhood that we’d like to talk about. Currently a white guy is in charge of the job. Within the army there are equal opportunity laws. Everyone is treated the same, and if you are caught disrespecting anyone based on nationality or gender, you will get punished under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice). This is true for the soldiers only, their sp ...
