Although not the only researcher to study the importance of personality, in 1937 Gordon Allport’s text Personality: A Psychological Interpretation, bolstered the importance of understanding the individuality of personality. Prior to Allport’s writing, psychologists typically studied habits, reflexes and the animalistic responses of rats and pigeons to stimuli and correlated the results to human society. Allport suggested that an individual’s personality was much more complex than simple responses to external stimuli, and came from motivation within the individual (McAdams, 2006, pp. 24-25, ¶ 3-4).
Allport argued for a break away from the nomothetic system of research of the time, where only general principles and laws of behavior were tested. He suggested an idiographic approach to understanding personality, where the general principles and laws of behavior would be abandoned in favor of viewing personality as specific to an individual as a whole person (McAdams, 2006, pp. 24-25, ¶ 3-4). Gordon Allport was not alone, as shown in chapter one of this week’s reading, between1930-1950 many other theories were developed; Murray’s (1938) personological system, Cattell’s (1947) trait theories, and Rogers’s (1942) humanistic theory (McAdams, 2006, pp. 25, par. 5). Prior psychoanalytic personality theories developed by Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Alfred Adler, and their clinical observations only further added to the study of personality psychology (McAdams, 2006, pp. 25, ¶ 6) leading up to 1950.
1950-1970
Marked by the end of World War II, there was a boom in the population of those seeking higher education, and psychology was an area of education sought-after by many. With funding offered by the United States government, university psychology departments began to specialize in particular areas of psychology such as: clinical, counseling and industrial/organizational psychology (McAdams, 2006, pp. 25-26). Moving away from the unverifiable theories of the 1930-1940’s eras, researchers systematically focused on observable and measurable traits of personality such as: extraversion (Eysenck, 1952), anxiety (Taylor, ...
