The brain consists of three layers that have evolved over millions of years, the most primitive of which is the central core. The central core of our brain is believed to be the most primitive part of our brain also referred to as the hindbrain because it is also found in vertebrates. Located where the spinal cord attaches to the skull and part of the central core is the medulla, which controls our most basic life sustaining functions such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and acts as a crossing point for the nerves that are connected to the brain further on.<br> A second part of the central core of the brain is the pons that creates chemicals that regulate another vital need we need to survive, which is our sleep-wake cycle. Thirdly and right before the midbrain is the cerebellum responsible for the bodies coordination, reflexes and balance. The thalamus is fourth; here most of the information from the lower nervous system is incorporated before they reach the higher brain levels. The fifth and final section of the brains primitive central core is the hypothalamus; which controls our basic desires of thirst, hunger, and sex drive and emotions such as rage, terror and pleasure. After millions of years of evolution the animals developed another section of the brain; however this section of the brain is only fully developed in humans and other mammals.<br> The more recent section of the brain then the central core is the limbic system, part of which are two hippocampus and two amygdala, one of each on either side of the brain.
