A dilemma with not spraying the pesticide to kill mosquitoes and help prevent the spread of the West Nile Virus is that tourists may be reluctant to visit Genericville because of the high potential of getting bit by a mosquito and contracting the disease. Because tourism is one of the main sources of income for our city, reduced tourism may affect us economically. To prevent such a dramatic loss in jobs and income from tourism, we must do something to encourage people to continue to visit Genericville.
An ideal brought up that is worth looking in to is using the money that would be spent to implement Malathion into our environment on educating the public. If we spent this money on both members of or city and tourists alike to educate them on what they can do as ind ...

Children and individuals with low body mass are also expected to be more reactive to low doses therefore are at high risk of getting the blow of the bad effects of the insecticide. Residents proximal to the areas with heavy Malathion concentration are also at the very high risk of exposure to relatively large amounts of the chemical either by skin contact with contaminated materials, by inhaling the mist formed or by ingestion of water or food borne residues. Intensive mass education with emphasis on following all the safety precaution prior to the insecticide application will reduce all the speculated risks. Uneducated residents may have some difficulty in considering those precautions.
The general population is not likely to be exposed to large amounts of Malathion. However, some exposure to residues of Malathion is possible. Many studies detected Malathion in foods and atmosphere samples. Residents at risk of exposure include the poor and uneducated people especially if they are not aware about the aerial spraying. Consumption or handling food contaminated with Malathion is another possible risk. Meanwhile, it is predicted that application of Malathion would also kill mosquito predators and damage the ecosystem. According to authorities however, long-term environmental risk from Malathion application is unlikely because of its rapid degradation into a harmless materials rapidly after application (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, 2005, Section 1). The risks imposed by Malathion application are believed to be avoidable with educational programs, precautions, and an awareness campaigns. The importance of education therefore needs to be highly emphasized to avoid exposure during Malathion applications and to prevent contact with residues for at least a week after applications. In conclusion, proponents suggested that risks from uncontrolled ...

The Precautionary Principle dictates that until it is demonstrated that the risks are small and the benefits outweigh the risks, new technology or chemicals should not be introduced into the environment.
Malathion application also carries the risk of indirectly increasing the mosquito population by killing off the mosquitoes natural predators. This will ultimately increase the number of WNV cases by an uncertain, potentially large number. While the probability of this occurring cannot be determined, it is definitely a step in the wrong direction.
In summation, the application of Malathion for the city of Genericville is denied. The risks to the environment and to the citizens are too great. More people can potentially become ill and die as a result of Malathion application. Malathion application can cause the mosquito population to increase in future years, thereby increasing the number of WNV infections. The uncertain long-term effects on the environment cannot be known, so Genericville should not take the risk. Educating citizens on avoiding mosquit ...

Our economy depends greatly upon tourists visiting our city during the summer months; without this revenue our city and its citizens will be in great despair. The poverty level will be at an all-time-high, which can lead to additional health risks for our citizens. The opponents to the application of Malathion fail to take the economic threat into account; they do, however site the precautionary principle as a factor to exclude its use.
According to the precautionary principle, we should not introduce new technology or
chemicals until it is demonstrated that (a) the risks are small and (b) the benefits outweigh the
risks. Using data provided by many scientists, one could extrapolate the estimated extinction dates of several types of large fishes should overfishing and destructive fishing practices be allowed to continue unchecked. One strategy for this is to schedule public speeches that are recorded on video or audio tape. The tapes can then be sent to states Congress members and governors. Microsoft PowerPoint is a tool that would allow presentations to be emailed to Congress members as well. Raising awareness of the benefits of decreased reliance on nonrenewable energy sources should be the primary point of emphasis in either style of presentation.
Once impressions are made and there is a high level of public support for the move to renewable energy, legislation will likely be enacted that will make the move more likely. Infrastructure construction could begin as soon as a few months after initial legislation. Construction on new facilities would likely follow, lasting as little as three years per solar generating station with an annual generating capacity of 40 Megawatts (De Wachter, 2007, 1). Such a capacity could potentially power 10,000 typical households for one year (Juwi Group, 2007, 4). Building solar power stations consumes energy, but a 40MW station will recoup the energy used to build it after just a year ( 8).
Once sufficient wind farms and solar farms are being built and world populations are able to witness a commitment to renewable energy, the demand for fossil fuels will begin to decline. As more and more renewable energy sources become available, reliance on the old way will begin to disappear. Though it could potentially take fifty or more years to fully establish a total reliance on renewable energy, world populations will not have to concern themselves with depleting energy sources.
The benefits of total reliance on renewable energy sources are apparent; no emissions of CO2, SO2, and NOX will lead to a reduction in acid deposition and a slowing of climate change. Dependence on drilling and mining for fossil fuels will virtually disappear. There cannot be any negative environment ...
