Q:
2. Final Project: Public Awareness and Human Diseases
Current disease trends in America include dramatic increases in obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, strokes, and other age- and lifestyle-related conditions. This suggests needs for community organizations to provide education and exercise programs for all ages; for employers to provide incentives for participation in health maintenance and wellness programs, gyms and exercise programs; and for hospitals to provide adequate follow-up instruction after discharge.
Resources: Appendix A and the appropriate Web site for the disease selected
Due Date: Day 7 [Individual] forum
Review the final project requirements described in Appendix A.
Select one of the following widespread health issues: obesity, congestive heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, or COPD. If you would like to choose another subject, you must contact the instructor by Week Five and seek approval for that disease.
Visit two or more of the following Web sites that are appropriate for your selected disease:
o Center for Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov
o Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.com
o American Heart Association: http://www.americanheart.org
o American Lung Association: http://www.lungusa.org
o American Diabetes Association: http://www.diabetes.org
o American Cancer Society: http://www.cancer.org
o WebMD®: http://www.webmd.com
Use a minimum of two of the above Web sites and four additional sources other than the text.
Provide an overview of the selected health issue.
Review at least one current program within your local K-12 schools, your employer, or your community that educates people about that disease. If you‘re not sure where to find

information, check the school district‘s Web site, your employer‘s Web site or human resources department, the city‘s Web site, or the county health department Web site.
Propose an improved community-based education/awareness program, targeted at the population most affected by the disease, that builds upon the existing program you are researching.
Combine the disease overview, review of the education program for the disease, and your proposal to improve the program into a paper according to the following guidelines:
o Identify the disease and describe characteristics of the group most affected by the disease.
o Discuss the major causes of the disease, which body systems are affected, and how those body systems are affected by the disease.
o Discuss risk factors that can be controlled and how to control them, as well as risk factors that cannot be controlled.
o Discuss the evolution of treatment options available to patients; give a brief history of treatment procedures over time.
o Describe current treatment methods, and include what patients can expect in regards to medical tests and procedures, equipment involved, therapies, and medications.
o Discuss future treatment options based upon current research.
o Evaluate the effectiveness of the existing education program you found.
What kind of information and patient support is available in the program?
How is the information delivered?
Is the information readily available to those who need it most?
Is the information comprehensive, helpful, supportive, etc.?
What is being done well?
What needs to be done better? How can it be accomplished?
What new features would you add to the program in order to improve it?
o Propose a new, effective way to get word of the improved program out to greater numbers of the targeted population.
Select a spokesperson: someone famous? An person? A cartoon character?
How will the information be distributed? On TV, in a game, in a newspaper or flier?
Compile your findings into a 2,000- to 2,400-word paper in APA format.
Post your paper as a Microsoft® Word attachment.

Banting and Best discovered insulin there was finally a way to survive for Type I patients and for Type II patients whose diet alone was not enough to help them contain their glucose levels in a more normal range (Gower, 2007). Today, however, diabetics with Type II can not only use diet and exercise alone to control their disease, or insulin injection, but also have the option of oral medication which can help increase the amount of insulin their bodies produce or help their bodies better absorb the insulin they produce (Burcum, 2000). Type II patients are also asked to test their glucose levels daily by taking a blood sample from their finger and putting it into a glucose meter (Type 2 Diabetes, 2009). In addition, Type II patients should be tested quarterly or more often to obtain an A1C, a blood test that determines their average level of glucose in the blood over a period of time, to see how well they control their glucose on a regular basis (Type 2 Diabetes, 2009). New treatment options are being discovered for Type II daily, but oral medication and insulin injection, when diet and exercise do not work alone, are still expected to remain the predominant treatment options for some time.
As can be seen, Type II is rapidly growing in minority, teen, and poorer communities. It is a disease that is completely avoidable and which education, effort, and encouragement may greatly help reduce the incidence of. Many area hospitals have developed programs, such as Huntington Hospital's Healthy Eating Lifestyle Program: Diabetes in California (see http://www.huntingtoncommunityoutreach.com/help_diabetes.html). However, these programs require people to first want to change and to then step outside of their normal, daily environment, to do something to stop the prevalence of the disease. For many people in poor minority communities, who are often working long hours only to just barely afford housing and food, the last thing they may want to do is take public transportation or time away from the few hours of non-work time they have to go to a hospital or school. For this reason, it is important for these programs to be in the community where the poor and minority groups live and must be provided to them by people in their community. The people in the community must accept and trust those who tell them how to eat, what to eat, what not to eat, how to get healthy, how to lose weight, and other things. They also need to have this information right at hand so that it is easy for them to access it and then listen to it and follow the program. This is also true for those who already have the disease who can be taught to reduce their risk for insulin injections and to perhaps stop their need for oral medication and avoid complications, such as lack of circulation, hearth disease, blindness, nerve damage, sores, and infections that may lead to amputation (Type 2 Diabetes, 2009).
The hospital's program reviews diet, ...
