When thinking about punishment, there are two important questions we must answer. Which type of punishment deters crime most effectively? Do the consequences of punishment provide any benefits for criminals and society? These questions are relevant, because they can help us understand up to what point we are behaving as rational beings. My intention is to answer these two questions and to offer a short but deep overview of how we should see punishment in our society.

Our society has established many types of punishments in an effort to deal with those who violate the law and, by doing so, cause harm to other individuals. Among the types of punishments, our legal systems contain fines, rehabilitation programs (which are considered by many not as punishment, but as an alternativ ...

Among types branded low risk by risk assessment techniques, the recidivism rate can be as low as 2%; among higher-risk categories, as much as 40% of offenders will find themselves in prison again (p. 1127). Given the positive and negative impacts of retribution and its perceived effectiveness, should retribution be sought before a different form of punishment?
Societal Protection
Societal protection is defined by Macionis (2006) as rendering an offender incapable of further offenses temporarily through imprisonment or permanently by execution (p. 183, 5).
In its most basic form, societal protection amounts to locking away offenders such that they cannot victimize other members of society. This route is often pursued when an offender has demonstrated an inability to reform, or when society is unwilling to reform an offender.
Societal protection is ultimately effective in attaining its goal. With offenders locked away or dead, no chance exists that they can disrupt society. The drawbacks to this method of punishment include that as crime increases, more prisons need to be built. If crime instead declines, society is left with useless prisons. Another drawback is that potentially productive members of society are never given a chance to reform.
