Empiricism and Materialism
Francis Bacon was also an important contributor in the mind-body theories. Â He was the first to develop the theory of empiricism. This is the belief that science can prosper through observations and experiences (Empiricism, n.d.). Locke and Bacon thought that the mind was a separate entity that continued to exist after death. Mind existing beyond death, on the other hand, was considered normal due to spirituality.
Another man by the name of David Hume agreed with Locke and Bacon. According to Empiricism (n.d.), âThese early empiricists and founders of modern science viewed the mind as a blank slate; that ideas and knowledge come from our senses and experiences.â Whether or not a person believes in the supernatural cannot be tested empirically. One is believed to exist based on science and things that are observed, not because of a supernatural being.
Most modern philosophers believe in materialism. Materialism is better known as the root of all science.
