Cattell argued that there are only two groups of criteria that need be considered. The first he identified as crystallized intelligence which includes reasoning, mathematical and verbal skills, which could and are often affected by education and experience. Secondly Cattell skills which he termed as fluid intelligence, which are skills that he states are: “…spatial and visual imagery, the ability to notice visual details, and rote memory.” (Morris & Maisto, 2005, p. 296 par. 3) and according to Beauduel, Brocke and Liepmann (2001) is not affected by education or experience. (Morris & Maisto, 2005) There are other theories on what constitute intelligence.
Slide four: • Contemporary theories include those of Robert Sternberg, Howard Gardner and Daniel Goleman. • Sternberg believes that there are many skills that constitute intelligence and stresses what he has termed as the “triarchic theory.” The first of the three aspects of this theory is analytical intelligence that includes the ability to learn, solve problems and perform tasks efficiently. Creative intelligence is next, which Sternberg describes as the ability to adapt to new ideas and apply them in novel ways. Lastly is practical intelligence which he describes as how he, or she shapes the environment they are in to meet their own needs and easily solve problems accordingly (Morris & Maisto, 2005). • As with Thurstone, Howard Gardner believes multiple aspects individual of each other make up what we call intelligence. Gardner states that there are eight abilities needed to define intelligence; logical which is the ability to reason and solve problems, mathematical, able to solve numerical equations and problems. Linguistic, having language skills, spatial, the ability to interact with their environment and shape it to their needs, bodily-kinesthetic or having superior body coordination and athletic abilities.
