Week 5 DQ 1 In my experiences, it is common for upper management to communicate to the common employees through letters and memos. The reason is to inform the employees of a policy change, or an up coming event. The decisions in this case have already been made so there is no reason to be persuasive. In cases when upper management is pushing workers to sign up for a certain benefit such as insurance, it is common for the employer to write a letter or memo, and then hold a company meeting if they are really trying to push the employee into it. When one member of management is communicating with another, I think that it is common for the conversation to start out through e-mail. It really depends on the issue though. For more pressing matters the communication is likely to start with a phone call. On normal every day matters or matters that are not so pressing yet, the communication starts with e-mail. I have not seen much instant messaging in any of the work environments I have been in. Once the initial contact has been made through e-mail, it is likely to progress to a phone call, once the issue begins to become more pressing. The reason for this is that e-mail is a slower means of communication. Meetings are mainly called when a decision has to be passed by two or more people, or when the two people involved can not reach an agreement.
