$3.00 HUM 130 Week 2 Discussion Question 1 (Due Today) [Please Read Instructions]

Q:
• Find two Web sites dealing with indigenous cultures and/or religions. Summarize what types of information can be found at each site. Use your own words. Please do not cut and paste passages from the sites. Thank you.
• Discuss how modern civilization has impacted the spiritual lives of the indigenous
peoples you explored. Are indigenous religions still practiced today? If so, how have the
practices changed over time?
• Post the two Web site URLs and names of the sites in the thread along with your answers (200 words+) to the questions. Please note, find credible webSITES about indigenous culture/religion, not encyclopedia/ wikipedia articles or question thread answers from commercial sites. Do not use: bellaonline, geocites, angelfire, aol.hometown, tripod or other commercial sites that host pages for the general public. Carefully read the posting Evaluating Web Sites.

My grandma is full-blooded Cherokee and is always taking an opportunity to teach me of the old rituals and beliefs.

http://www.cherokeediscovery.com/religiousbeliefs.html

Indigenous people tend to have a very different relationship between themselves and the world they live in, especially their food. The notion of their land being sacred is quite common in indigenous spirituality, as is the notion of people being descendant of the sacredness of the land. That is simply awareness that humans are part of the natural processes, which are valued as being sacred in most cultures. Depending on when, how and by whom, agriculture was introduced to a culture, their spirituality has tended to shift along with this new relationship with their food. The supply of food was no longer a natural process, but a human process. Spiritual concepts often adapt to this new relationship by declaring humans special, and concepts of the gods change to be more agrarian in nature.

Many indigenous religions have been squashed out by the modern world by forced conversion, the religion being made illegal to practice, or simply the indigenous people leaving the old ways behind. What might be surprising to nonreligious people (especially nonreligious Americans) is that science has not played a part in the decline of indigenous practices. There are still MANY indigenous religions practiced around the world. The African religions are still very much alive, Shamanism is still practices in Korea, and the indigenous peoples of both Australia and New Zealand practice their religions ...

Although the religion itself has changed very little over the centuries, there are far fewer people practicing this ancient form of religion every year, according to annu ...
