Safety of the automobile has improved over the decades, but countless people are injured in some manner every day.<br> The externalities of automobile use directly affect the economy by transferring related expenses directly to the consumer. The most notable expense that is relayed to the consumer is fuel taxes. When the government increases these taxes, the oil companies do not pay it. The tax is directly placed upon the consumer. Government policies also require insurance to be carried by every car owner causing additional expenses to the consumer. Another expense that is directed at the consumer is toll roads. The owner of the automobile pays to drive on a particular road, which in turn pays for the construction of the road. Before making a purchase of an automobile, every owner must consider how this will play into his or her budget. When the externality expenses of owning an automobile increase, the consumer decreases the amount of expendable income that he or she would use to purchase other goods.<br> The automobile industry produces private goods. The goods produced by the industry include public transportation such as buses and trains or subways and the personal automobile. The goods must be purchased from the manufacturer and can be excluded from use by another individual. For example, if a person sits in one seat on a public bus or owns a particular car, the consumer excludes anyone else from using that seat or car.<br>Wage Inequality<br> Declining employment has accompanied softening wages in many instances in the automotive industry.
