Although the doctor explains every step to his patient and asks all necessary questions, collaborative communication is not immediately present due to the lacking in quality of overall communication, gestures, and environment.
Perspectives
In the scenario above, Vivians perspective upon entering the doctors office was to discuss her pain with her caregiver, have her concerns addressed, and receive care to alleviate her pain. When her ability to voice her concerns and opinions becomes sacrificed, her perspective seems to change to just exchanging the necessary information and getting the visit over as quickly as possible. The assistants perspective, as displayed by her lack of concern and sympathy, was simply to check-in all the patients, and call patients to the examining room as quickly as possible to keep things moving along. Her perspective is to get her job done as quickly and efficiently as possible. Her perspective may have changed if the office was less busy and/or she was not as stressed out. However, the assistants job description does not allow her to discuss symptoms with patients or offer possible solutions and therefore may have kept her perspective to simply checking in patients instead of addressing concerns. The caregivers perspective appeared to be to have important questions answered in order to diagnose the patients illness and to do so as quickly as possible in order to fit in as many patients as possible. I think that if the socialization between patient and caregiver were different, the caregivers perspective may have changed as well. Some factors that may contribute to poor communication would include differing perspectives, outside factors such as cultural views, time restraints, and levels of stress and burnout. No matter what the situation may be, it is important to remember that is takes two people to engage in communication. However, these different perspectives may lead to different expectations of the situation as well. The following chart (Health Communication, 2008) helps display the importance of issuing good health communication in many different areas:
The most important aspect of effective health communication is to make sure the patient and caregiver are on the same page and working as a team. Often times, caregivers are taught to heal strictly by relying on science and do not have an extensive background in communication. This can often leads to a conflict regarding communication. When outside factors such as stress and time restraints are present, it can become increasingly hard for a caregiver to maintain his, or her, perspective of promoting the hig ...
