During the course of my interview, I learned a great deal from a Catholics point of view.
During the interview with Dorothy, I learned that only after her sister died in a car accident several years ago she began her dedication to the church. Although she comes from a long line of Catholics and attended Catholic services as a child, from her high school years up until 1997 she did not attend church regularly. She would later become a regular and devout member of the church. She attends most services and reads her Holy Bible numerous times a week. She jokingly called herself a “holiday Catholic,” meaning she only attended during key holidays. The holidays included: Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent; Easter, the day to celebrate Christ’s resurrection; and Christmas, the day Christ was born.
When I asked Dorothy about Jesus Christ and some of the sacred practices of the church, she answered back with overwhelming confidence. She described Jesus Christ as “God manifest in the flesh, our savior.” Dorothy then proceeded to tell me how “baptism signifies the cleansing of the soul and is the sign that you are a child of God,” and the purpose of communion was “to remember that Christ died for our sins. She believed by taking communion she was “accepting a part of Jesus into my body” which made her feel as though she was “one with him” Considering that I am not a very religious individual, I was taken back by how strongly her feelings towards these questions were.
For the next part of the interview, we walked around the church a little. It was a magnificent structure with beautiful stain-glass murals in each one of the windows, and tall gold trimmed ceilings. I was curious to know how a church such as this was finically supported. I learned that in addition to the collection plates passed around during service, they also have numerous fund raisers to help support the churches financial needs.
To conclude the interview, I asked Dorothy how her faith in the Catholic religion has changed or shaped her life. In a nutshell, she explained that by her having faith is something greater than herself, and greater than logic, it helps her “do the right things” and keeps her from “giving into the temptations of evil.” Dorothy sees no challenges with practicing her religion. She simply practices her faith because “it feels right.” I commended her for having such strong beliefs and taking the time to sit down with me to express them while answering my questions. I was truly humbled by my visit to the church and experiencing all that I did that day.
The mass at St. Vincent’s that I attended was quite a bit different from the services I remembered going to as a child, which were far and few in-between. I was nervous and felt quite out of place upon entering. The services that I remember as a child were nothing like these Catholic services. Some of the things I remember from my youth are still the same at modern masses ...

Observance of the Holocaust and other holidays may or may not contain rituals.

The Sabbath
Perhaps the most widely recognized symbol of Judaism is the observance of the Sabbath. The way of life for a Jew revolves around a six-day workweek while observing the Sabbath on the seventh day. While a gentile, a person other than a Jew, may perceive this as only a day of rest, when work is prohibited, the Sabbath is intended to be a holy day, a Yom Kadosh, which is set aside from the other days. “In six days the Lord made heaven and earth and sea, and all that is in them … and rested on the seventh day … therefore God blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:11) By ceasing work on the seventh day Jews testify that the world is not theirs; that God is the Lord and Creator of the universe. This symbolizes the returning of all things, as it were, to God’s domain. The Sabbath is a day to refresh the body and soul, and to renew the covenant with God, the Creator. (To Be a Jew, 1972)
Observance of Jewish Rituals on the Sabbath
Beginning at sunset on Friday evening, the Sabbath is filled with rituals and chants that heighten one’s awareness to God, the Creator whom rested on the seventh day. In the home of Rabbi Hillel Norry and his wife, Johanna, the rituals begin with Johanna lighting the Sabbath candles shortly before nightfall. Then, they walk to the synagogue to begin the Kabbalat Shabbat, or Welcoming the Sabbath. The Shearith Israel Conservative synagogue conveniently located in Atlanta's historic intown Morningside / Virginia-Highland neighborhood. The inside is quite plain with very limited decorations, and there is a closed off section for the women to sit. The women sit separate from the men as not to distract the men from their praying. Once everyone is seated, the services begin with a prayer recited over the Torah. Then the congregation chants a few prayers in Hebrew. Following the chanting, the rabbi delivers the weekly message, and then a few more prayers are given. The togetherness of the congregation is extremely uplifting in nature, even if a person does not know any Hebrew. Everyone is extremely kind and welcoming, even to outsiders that want to learn about their culture and religion.
Once the services have concluded, everyone returns home to have the ritual Sabbath dinner. Everyone gathers around the Sabbath table to sing the traditional Shalom Aleichem. Then the father blesses the children, and progresses on to give the Sabbath Kiddush (Sanctification). Exodus 20:8 states “Remember the Sabbath day and sanctify it.” Upon completion of the sanctification, the women answer “Amen.” Next, everyone completes a ritual of cleansing the hands. Several other prayers and blessing are performed, including the blessing of the hallah (bread) loaves. T ...
