· How Did Life Originate?
· Research a theory about the origin of life on Earth other than the one summarized under Piecing It Together on p. 247 of the text, which is the following:

1. Earth's early atmosphere was considerably different from today's, containing much
more carbon dioxide and nearly no free oxygen.
2. Experiments conducted since the early 1950s have confirmed that simple carbonbased
compounds, including amino acids, will spontaneously form under conditions
typical of Earth's early atmosphere.Astronomers commonly observe carbon-based
compounds throughout the universe.
3. Over time, naturally occurring chemical processes combined simple carbon-based
compounds into more complex ones, including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, phospholipids,
and nucleotides (RNA and DNA) leading to protocells.

· Use the following key words and Web sites to assist you with your search:
o Origin of life
o Panspermia theory
o Hydrothermal vent and origin of life
o Prebiotic world
o http://www.chem.duke.edu/~jds/cruise_chem/Exobiology/sites.html
o http://www.resa.net/nasa/origins_life.htm
· Post a 300- to 400-word response to the following: Describe and evaluate both the origin
of life theory summarized in Piecing It Together on p. 247 and the other theory you
researched at the beginning of this CheckPoint. Be skeptical when reviewing the
theories. Skepticism is the hallmark of any scientific effort. Ask the following questions
about each theory:
o Where is the evidence to support this claim?
o Is there any data on which to base their claim?

Preview: ... prove Oparin's theory. He created a device that dispersed gases that were likely to be present in the early atmosphere, and then he past an electrical discharge, stimulating the UV rays present in the early atmosphere. After allowing the experiment to continue for a week, the results were startling; the previously colorless solution inside the apparatus had become red. After the solution was analyzed, Miller found that most of the organic molecules present could not be readily identified; this in effect proved Oparin's theory that organic compounds could have been created in the early atmosphere. However, there have been other theories that do not support this experiment; is the Cosmozoa theory; which states that life was brought to earth from somewhere else, and the theory of spontaneous generation; which states that life can suddenly and spontaneously appear. Therefore, this essay will discuss the many different perspectives and theories of the origin of life and each of these theories discuss the environmental factors that would affect the possibility of the recurrence<br>of the origin of life due to the different atmosphere during the primeval Earth. Also this essay will discuss the influences of Sydney Fox, and Stanley Miller on the current theories. And the past point of view about evolution will also be covered, and therefore, the basic idea of the current and past models of the origin of life will be encompassed. Therefore the different perspectives and theories of the origin of life will be discussed, which has been a question of the past, and perhaps future. <br> The main focus of Oparin's theory is even though Spontaneous Generation cannot due to the experiment performed by ...

The rocks that arrived on Earth contain bacteria. Bacteria can survive in a dormant state. Bacteria can also survive in harsh environments. Although some explanation is given, it is still highly unlikely that life can be formed so spontaneously. There are many factors that one would need to take into account for this theory to remain plausible. Researchers would h ...
