Q:
The employment interview
Jerry Sullivan is the underwriting manager for a large insurance company located in the Southwest. Recently, one of his best employees had given him two weeks’ notice of her intention to leave. She was expecting a baby soon, and she and her husband had decided she was going to quit work and stay home with her new baby and her other two young children.
Today, Jerry was scheduled to start interviewing applicants for this job. The first applicant was Barbara Riley. She arrived at the company’s office promptly at 9a.m, the time scheduled for her interview. Unfortunately, just before she arrived, Jerry received a phone called from his boss, who had just returned from a three-week vacation. He wanted Jerry to bring him up to date on what had been going on. The telephone conversation lasted 30 minutes. During that time, Barbara was seated in the company’s reception room.
At9:30a.m, Jerry want to the reception room and invited her into his office. The following conversation occurred:
Jerry: Would you like a cup of coffee?
Barbara: No, I’ve already had one
Jerry: You don’t mind if I have a cup, do you?
Barbara: No, go right ahead. (Jerry pauses, and rings his secretary Dorothy Cannon)
Jerry: Dorothy, would you fix me a cup of coffee?
Dorothy: I’ll bring it in shortly. You have a call on line 1.
Jerry: Who is it?
Dorothy: It’s Tom Powell, our IBM representative. He wants to talk to you about the delivery date on our new word processor.
Jerry: I’d better talk to him. (Turning to Barbara) I’d better take this call. I’ll only be a minute. (He picks up his phone) Well, Tom, where are we going to get our machines?
This phone conversation goes on for almost 10 minutes. After hanging up, Jerry turns again to Barbara to resume the interview.
Jerry: I’m sorry, but I needed to know about those machines. We really do need them. We only have a short time, so why don’t you just tell me about yourself.
At that point, Barbara tells Jerry about her education, which includes an undergraduate degree in psychology and an MBA, which she will be receiving shortly. She explains to Jerry that this will be her first full-time job. Just then the phone rings, and Jerry’s secretary tells him that his next interviewee is waiting.
Jerry: (Turns to Barbara) thank you for coming in. I’ll be in touch with you as soon as I interview two more applicants for this job. However, I need to ask you a couple of quick questions.
Barbara: OK
Jerry: Are you married?
Barbara: I am divorced.
Jerry: Do you have children?
Barbara: Yes, two boys.
Jerry: Do they live with you?
Barbara: Yes.
Jerry: The reason I am asking is that this job requires some travel. Will this pose a problem?
Barbara: No.
Jerry: Thanks, I’ll be in touch with you.
1. Outline the inadequacies of this interview.
2. What information did Jerry learn?
3. What do you think of Jerry’s last questions?
