Age, gender, social class, family influence, and everything else that goes into making society what it is would determine a person’s values and thus that person’s desire to join the military. For those young adults who believed their choices were limited or that going into the military would provide the best opportunities, a sociologist would say that society pushed these young adults into the military (which is not altogether a bad situation). For those wanting to ...

After being forced from their homes in the Great Lakes region, many Batwa took up residence at the edge of towns. From here, the only remaining cultural activity that can help them survive is their pottery. Using clay found in the area, the Batwa most often fashion clay cooking pots which are then carried to town by the Batwa men and sold for 6 cents each. Recognizing this, the Rwanda government is now denying the use of the clay by Batwa pottery makers. Claiming research on rice cultivation, clay harvesting has been made illegal (Matthews, 2006).
The Batwa are being left with fewer and fewer options for making an income to support their families. Living in such dire poverty is proving to be too difficult, and many Batwa are beginning to disappear; however, those who have chosen the route of societal integration are facing difficult roads. Discrimination and prejudice abound. For instance, some outside the Batwa community have offered food to the Batwa, only to refuse to eat from the same pool of food once the Batwa have come into contact with it. The prejudice and discrimination does not end here. Batwa have even been excluded from drinking the communal wine during celebrations because they are “too dirty” (Matthews, 2006).
Batwa children are not immune to the effects of prejudice and discrimination. Many do not like to go to school because of the behavior of the children from outside the Batwa community. These other children will often throw things at them and call them names (Matthews, 20 ...

Preview: ... in the training and development strategy of organizations. Many formal organizations are developing these strategies to target the millennials, the youngest Internet generation of knowledge workers. The challenge to organizations is to purge themselves of corporate bottlenecks and hierarchy, open up their internal communications, and supply progressive training and development in order to draw the interest of this younger group.
Technological advancement has also lent itself to a change in communication penchants. With the advent of email, instant messaging, and blogs, the preferred communication methods are drastically different than they were a century ago. Why write a letter and drop it off at the post office when some typing and a few mouse clicks will accomplish the same task in a fraction of the time? Steady changes in technology have stark impacts on different aspects of organization, making it necessary for organizations to keep updated with new trends and methods or risk falling behind competitors.
Small Group and Formal Organization
In the example provided, Micah’s organization holds onto more bureaucratic principles. In order to become more open and flexible, his organization will need to embrace less bureaucratic ideals. To begin this process, specific roles within the organization need to be defined. By placing emphasis on this first step, there is less likelihood that higher authorities in the organization will reproduce their own positions, thus perpetuating the pyramidal structure and not allowing it to change. As German sociologist Robert Michele said,” An oligarchy develops when a few individuals at the top of an organization acquire sufficient unchecked power and authority to make arbitrary decisions irrespective of the needs, wants, and concerns of the rest of the organization, its clients, and neighbors” (Hansen, 2003, p.3).
All members of Micah’s organization will need to take a part in some of the organization’s responsibilities, realizing that responsibilities are not solely for the organization’s executives and administrators. By appointing staff based on competence and specialized ...
