Both of these protocols are installed by default on the server and both provide encryption of data. PPTP uses MPEE 40-128 bit encryption while L2TP uses IPSec or DES to encrypt data and supports 56-128 bit encryption. We can choose either of the protocols after considering the points below:

PPTP can be used with different types of dial-up client including older Windows95 (practically not used anymore), Windows98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and latest Windows Vista.

PPTP provides user level authentication using different authentication protocols such as EAP, CHAP, MS-CHAP, SPAP and PAP.

L2TP/IPSec supports newer operating systems such as Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista clients. Although Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows NT 4.0 can be used as a client with support of L2TP/IPSec VPN client installed.

L2TP/IPSec provides both computer level and user level authentication and requires PKI infrastructure or use of pre-shared key of authentication.

L2TP can encapsulate traffic on a variety of networks including ATM, X.25 and Frame Relay. As we have chosen Frame Relay while designing our WAN, it would be a wise choice to go for L2TP. In contrast PPTP supports only IP-based network, which is of no use for our remote access solution.

Office Applications:

To use RAS remotely, you need a RAS client program, which is built into most versions of Windows, or any PPP client software. Remote access can be used with products such as Windows Server 2003 family to provide access to corporate intranet for remote access client that are making L2TP/IPSec connection across internet. To make our remote access server suppor ...

This is done using a fractional T1.Selected segments of the VPN can be securely opened to business partners, suppliers and clients. Companies can leverage their VPNs by running voice over the virtual circuits between their locations. IT specialists only need to plan and configure the authentication and connection.

Network Protocols

Two popular VPN protocols were considered. Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) and Secure Socket Layer (SSL). IPsec is the most common protocol for secure VPNs. IPsec protocols operate at the network layer, or layer three of the OSI model. SSL protocols operate from the transport layer up, OSI layers four through seven. This makes IPsec more flexible because it can be used for protecting layer 4 protocols, including both TCP and UDP, the most commonly used transport layer protocols. IPsec has an important advantage over SSL. Application level programs do not need to be designed to use IPsec. The ability to use SSL or other higher-layer protocols must be incorporated into the design of the application. The limitation of IPSec; however, is that it can only carry IP packets.
SSL VPNs are designed to address the needs of diverse users that need secure access to administrator-specified corporate resources. These resources are accessed from a wide variety of devices from many locations. The network administrator can change both the access methods and the resources allowed as the users’ circumstances change. The users can include mobile employees, contractors, offshore employees, business partners, and customers. As a result, SSL VPNs offer users the convenience of being able to access corporate resources using any Web-enabled device from anywhere. Disadvantages to SSL VPN include additional hardware and training costs and they requ ...
