It is always observed as a one-day holiday, both inside and outside the boundaries of the land of Israel.
Sukkot is a 7-day festival, also known as the Feast of Booths, the Feast of Tabernacles, or just Tabernacles. It is one of the three pilgrimage festivals mentioned in the Bible. The word sukkot is the plural of the Hebrew word sukkah, meaning booth. Jews are commanded to "dwell" in booths during the holiday. This generally means taking meals, but some sleep in the sukkah as well. There are specific rules for constructing a sukkah. The seventh day of the holiday is called Hoshanah Rabbah.
Simchat Torah means "rejoicing with the Torah". It actually refers to a special ceremony which takes place on the holiday of Shemini Atzeret. This holiday immediately follows the conclusion of the holiday of Sukkot. In Israel, Shemini Atzeret is one day long and includes the celebration of Simchat Torah. Outside Israel, Shemini Atzeret is two days long and Simchat Torah is observed on the second day, which is often referred to by the name of the ceremony.
The last portion of the Torah is read, completing the annual cycle, followed by the first chapter of Genesis. Services are especially joyous, and all attendees, young and old, are involved.
The story of Hanukkah is preserved in the books of the First and Second Maccabees. These books are not part of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible), they are apocryphal books instead. The miracle of the one-day supply of oil miraculously lasting eight days is first described in the Talmud. Hanukkah marks the defeat of Seleucid Empire forces that had tried to prevent the people of Israel from practicing Judaism. Judah Maccabee and his brothers destroyed overwhelming forces, and rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem. The eight-day festival is marked by the kindling of lights one on the first night, two on the second, and so on using a special candle holder called a Chanukkiyah, or a Hanukkah menorah. There is a custom to give children money on Hanukkah to commemorate the learning of Torah in guise of Jews gathering in what was perceived as gambling at that time since Torah was forbidden. Because of this, there is also the custom to play with the dreidel.
Tenth of Tevet This minor fast day marks the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem as outlined in 2 Kings 25:1 And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and encamped against it; and they built forts against it round about. As a minor fast day, fasting from dawn to dusk is required, but other laws of mourning are not observed. A Torah reading and Haftorah reading, and a special prayer in the Amidah, are added at both Shacharit and Mincha services.
Tu Bishvat is the new year for trees. According to the Mishnah, it marks the day from which fruit tithes are counted each year, and marks the timepoint from which the Biblical prohibition on eating the first three years of fruit and the requirement to bring the fourth year fruit to the Temple in Jerusalem were counted. In modern times, it is celebrated by ea ...

How does the Jewish community maintain this trust?
“Judaism moved beyond having a priestly position over 2000 years ago after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. A rabbi is not a priest. Rabbis do not lead services. Anyone that can read Hebrew and chants can lead services. Rabbis are not viewed as anything more than the teachers of the congregation. Rabbi’s have personal lives and are married with children, so they are very down to earth and can offer moral advice on the best way to lead a Jewish life. I have dealt with the death of my wife and raising four teenage girls on my own; so I have much experience to share, but that is simply what it is, experience to share.
10. How does Judaism view the suffering that is happening in the world around us?
“Judaism is not a dogmatic religion. This means that there is much freedom of thought, so there is in turn, no official position. Some Jews believe that the suffering is a punishment. This is not something I believe. Especially in the case of children who are sick that believe that they have done something wrong and so are being punished. Some believe that Hurricane Katrina was due to the sins of New Orleans. I don’t believe this either. Personally, I would never say that to anyone, especially in pastoral counseling. We are actually taught that when we are taught to counsel. We are taught to make sure people don’t think that their suffering is a punishment. There is also
Judaism P 8
another train of thought that like the book of Job, there is no real answer. God’s ways are not our ways, and we simply cannot understand God’s ways. There is the belief in not only Judaism, but Christianity as well, that during your suffering, God is your strength and comfort. In Jewish mysticism, there is the belief that God went into exile with the people of Israel that were freed from Egypt by Moses. This shows the feminist image of God, in that it is a very comforting image. It is very powerful for me that God is with us in our difficult times. In Jewish mysticism, there is also the idea that the world is not perfect, by it’s very nature, it cannot be. When the world was created, God was in everything, but for us to be here, God must withdraw his presence, leaving only sparks of the divine that it is up to us to ignite in the world.
11. Judaism has been the subject of much religious intolerance. How have Jews fought back and maintained their beliefs despite the adversity facing them.
“The Jewish family is the bedrock of Jewish belief. We have created Jewish communal institutions to maintain our belief in community. There is a social service network that is amazing in relation to the size of the world wide Jewish community. Jews feel a tremendous sense of responsibility to other Jews, especially those from Israel. Despite it’s small size, Israel has taken in more Jewish refugees than any other country on earth. We are also able to achieve such things due to the study of religion. This gives the community a sense of inner strength.”
12. What are the most important rituals or practices of Judaism?
Judaism P 9
“There is the reading ...

This is not a new sacrifice but, the same one brought forward. At the end of time then, those that are judged righteous from their baptism will rise to the marriage banquet but, the Catholics have been there all the time and are there at every Mass. Jesus supposedly even says something like this when in the gospel of John when he and Peter are walking away and Jesus is talking to Peter and Peter turns around and says to Jesus “what about him?” (Meaning John who was following them) and Jesus says---"If I want him to remain forever---what's it to you" This is basically saying the same thing that Joseph said in the Old Testament when it came to Benjamin remaining with him. John would never really die but, he would change in the twinkling of an eye.
Catholicism claims to be the original Christian church based on the apostle Peter as its head (thus, the popes down through time). The followers of the religion is trying to expand the religion in New Mexico, other temples is in the works. The temple currently residing in New Mexico is called Hanuman Temple The Hanuman Temple is located in the mountains of Taos, New Mexico. The location is about four hours from my home. I decided to drive their on my three day weekend in September. When I first arrived at the temple I was not sure I was in the right place. The temple was described as a place of worship for those who practice the Hinduism religion. Well, I was very shock at the looks at the place it was old and not that pretty. Went I went up to the place the doors were lock so I made a destination to the local library in Taos.

At the library I found a few different pamphlets that let me in on the mystery of the Hanuman Temple. The Hanuman Temple in Taos, New Mexico is operated by western devotees of Neem Karoli Baba. The pictures were quite deceiving from what I saw, but I never got the chance to go in, I only look through the windows. That shows that just because it is not pretty it is still sacred to others. The temple from the pictures I saw in the pamphlet had sculptures and nice rugs laying on the ground with decorative pictures of some kind. The temple seems cherish of the Hindu Religion but as for my own personable experience with temples of my religion their was a big difference. Catholicism temple are beautifully decorated with pane glass and sculptures. Why the difference an individual might ask, I believe Hindus do not care about materialism and focus on the spirituality of the religion.

I conducted an interview with an individual from my own town that practices Hinduism, his name is Ajay Patel. Ajay Patel owns several local business in our small town. Ajay Patel is a kind individual in which we shared a nice lunch while speaking about the religion of Hinduism. At the beginning of the conversation I ask Ajay Patel to explain the significance of the religion. Ajay Patel explained to me that the religion is one of the most ancient religions in world. As young child he grew up in India were he was taught on the a daily basis that the religion was the only way of life (Patel, A., 2008). In every aspect of life t ...

Bassiouni also states that this was Muhammad’s wahy or a divine inspiration or revelation (Bassiouni, 1999).
The sacred scriptures of Islam are the Qur’an. According to Bassiouni (1999), “Muslims believe that the Qur’an is the Word of Allah expressed through the revelations to the Prophet” Muhammad (Bassiouni, 1999). The Qur’an means, literally, recitations. It has 114 chapters revealed to Muhammad during a period of 23 years. According to Bassiouni, these chapters were revealed to the Prophet in Mecca and Madina. Each chapter varies in length, and they are not arranged in chronological order of their revelation. They are arranged according to the length of each chapter or Surah. The longest is first, and the shortest is last. It has also been said that throughout the history of Islam, no one has challenged the accuracy of the Qur’an (Bassiouni, 1999).
SITE REVIEW:
The Islamic site that I reviewed was the Islamic Center of Chicago which happens to be on Fairhaven in Chicago, IL. This Islamic mosque was founded in 1997 and is directed by Iman Yousef Said who had an Islamic center in Houston, but decided to relocate to Chicago, IL after the tragedy of September 11. He is a very open minded Islamic leader in that he tries to have good ties with both the Islamic community of the region, but also with other churches and denominations in the area. They have an annual event that they open their doors to non-Islamic people so that they can learn about Islam first-hand. The center also goes to other churches and tries to promote a healthy environment to other faiths. This site is open every day for the required five prayers a day and has many activities for its members.
The Islamic Center of Chicago, IL is a very beautiful building that has a white exterior and has the traditional domed entrances. The main building has a very large prayer hall and has separate entrances for men and women. I found that it also has a separate prayer room for women so that they can pray undisturbed. It also has a library that has texts in Arabic. The center also has a school called the Al-Madinah school that teaches Muslim students. This school teaches Arabic, the Qur’an, the life of Muhammad, Islamic law and how to worship.
I found that this mosque was very different and more ope ...

About 1300BCE, many Hebrews moved to Egypt to escape a famine. A famine is a great hunger. At first, the Hebrews were treated well in Egypt, but in time they were enslaved by the Egyptians. According to Hebrew tradition, God sent ten deadly plagues to Egypt when the Egyptians would not release the Hebrew slaves. When the Hebrews did escape, tradition states that Moses, the leader of the Hebrews, parted the Red Sea for just enough time to allow the Hebrews to pass. Once the Hebrews reached the other side, tradition states that the waters returned and the Egyptian army drowned. It was, however, very difficult for me to get in touch with a representative, so I decided to simply make an unannounced trip there in expectation that I would be able to speak to someone who had a strong grasp on Shintoism. My efforts were certainly rewarded; I was able to connect with an English-speaking man who was responsible for maintaining the tea ceremony room. He gave me a great deal of valuable information, and it is with this information that I am able to offer a summary of the religion, in addition to being able to compare and contrast it to Christianity and draw up a conclusion.
Shintoism is a very old Chinese religion which advanced around 500 BC (Personal Interview, 2009). Exact details of Shintoism’s origins is very difficult to receive because of the fact that that there are no official texts or leaders within this movement. As a result, Shintoism is defined as a set of values and principles that developed in the larger framework of Japanese society (Personal Interview, 2009). This belief system has grown in conjunction with Buddhism. Actually, many scholars believe that in early Japanese history, both Shintoism and Buddhism could not be distinguished from each another.

Even though Shintoism expanded from a Buddhism framework, it has been recognized as a separate religion and spiritual way of living. The fundamental element of Shintoism concerns deities or Kami, who are accountable for the construction of Japan and the expansion of a variety of tribes that reside in the region (Handbook of Today’s Religions, 2009). In general, the Kami that exist in Shintoism are benevolent gods that play a constructive role in the growth of humanity. Accordingly, Shintoism does not dwell on the framework of divine intervention as it pertains to day-to-day living. Instead, Shintoism centers on the growth of life that is lived in search of additional supercilious social standards (Personal Interview, 2009). In many situations, Shintoism uses a large amount of its basic principles from the Confucian tradition.
Even though Shintoism is extremely interlaced with both Confucian and Buddhist ideologies, it has been noted that there are dissimilar components of the practices which undoubtedly distinguish them. For example, Shintoism believes that ancestors are extremely respected and even worshipped. Also, all people are thought of as 'Kami's child’ (Personal Interview, 2009). In addition, there are four assertions that are significant in Shintoism, and include elements of tradition, love, hygiene, and worship (Personal Interview, 2009). Shintoism was established through these values.

All of components of Shintoism center on the growth and ...
