Q:
o What role, if any, do you think people should play in preserving those regions
threatened by human encroachment?
o How should the interests of competing groups be balanced?
· Example: Drilling in the Arctic—environmental groups oppose the plan on the
grounds of the destruction to the habitat; those in favor argue that tapping into
the oil there would be good for the economy and decrease reliance on foreign oil.
o What about when the habitat is not within the U.S. borders? Many international
conservation groups are working to save the rainforest—what rights do people have
to interfere with how another sovereign nation chooses to manage its lands? If the
government of Bolivia is willing to allow millions of acres of jungle to be destroyed to
promote the logging industry (which provides employment to their citizens), should
people intervene? Why or why not?

Preview: ... ardless of the fact if the land that environmental groups are trying to preserve is outside of US borders, it should still be carefully evaluated; is this slight economic improvement worth long time disaster? I think not! <br>In order to reach a balance where both economic and environmental views can be satisfied, I believe that government needs to be more involved in how the exploitation of natural resources is done. There need to be stricter rules and regulations applicable to all corporations that would strictly regulate how much of the natural resources can be exploited and at what rate. Also, government should set a lot higher fines that would be applied to all corporations who are not compliant. The rules and fines should be applicable to all corporations originating from US, regardless on whose land they are working on. Moreover, if every sovereign country ...
