There are seven species of turtles in the world, and six of them live on the reef. The reef is also home to the largest population of Dugong, a marine animal more closely related to elephants than the dolphins and whales they resemble. Dugongs are endangered, and seemingly have disappeared from places like western Sri Lanka, the Sakishima Shot Islands off the coast of Japan, the Maldives, several Islands in the Philippines, some waters near Cambodia and Vietnam and Hong Kong's Pearl River estuary. Australia has created marine parks and Dugong Protection Areas in an attempt to slow the disappearance of this fascinating species. Humpback whales, mink whales, orcas, manta rays, dolphins and over 165 shark species also call the barrier reef home.<br><br>Amazingly, this wide variety of wildlife has managed to live together and thrive for hundreds of thousands of years. Many of the animals on the reef eat plants, such as grasses, plankton and seaweed. Others, like sharks, are a little more vicious and eat the other creatures located in the area. Sometimes the food chain is very short, like the whales who eat the plankton, while other times it can be extensive, such as the tuna who eat squid who eat anchovies who eat crustaceans who eat plankton, and guess who eats the tuna?
