Dugongs are endangered, and seemingly have disappeared from places like western Sri Lanka, the Sakishima Shot Islands off the coast of Japan, the Maldives, several Islands in the Philippines, some waters near Cambodia and Vietnam and Hong Kong's Pearl River estuary. Australia has created marine parks and Dugong Protection Areas in an attempt to slow the disappearance of this fascinating species. Humpback whales, mink whales, orcas, manta rays, dolphins and over 165 shark species also call the barrier reef home.<br><br>Amazingly, this wide variety of wildlife has managed to live together and thrive for hundreds of thousands of years. Many of the animals on the reef eat plants, such as grasses, plankton and seaweed. Others, like sharks, are a little more vicious and eat the other creatures located in the area.
