Consequently, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority was formed under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975. It's goals are to manage the Marine Park, conduct research and provide educational, advisory and informational services. There are a number of projects in place to prevent further damage to the reef, but there are also a number of things that cause the damage, and the fight seems endless. Boating has proven very destructive. It causes pollution, stirs up sediment and breaks off chunks of coral, further damaging the reef. Sediment is washed off of the land, by rain and through rivers. This sediment contains pollutants that harm the reef and it's wildlife. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park zoning plan features a network of marine sanctuaries that cover various parts of the reef, it is the world's largest group of marine sanctuaries. This zoning plan protects 33% of the reef from fishing, hunting, trawling and other destructive practices.
