Profits are the excess of revenue over expenses, and is an amount whose measure is taken at a particular point in time. Just because a company earns a profit does not mean it is profitable. Many bankrupt companies have earned profits, yet, due to their lack of profitability (meaning thier ability to convert profits into cash in the business repeatedly) have had to close down. Companies have both short term and long term expenses and earning cycles. Profit can be earned in the short term, but lost in the long term if a company fails to protect its ability to meet its long term obligations with the short run profits it makes.
