Clearly, in my community, racial minorities have continued to be treated differently and unfairly. When this happens, corrective action has been taken and offenders are subjected to legal procedures. This shows that despite pre ...

Environmental issues need to taken aware of in both local and national levels of government. The citizens of this country need to write and call our elected officials and express concerns about energy efficiency and global warming. With enough calls, they will then realize what the people of our country are most concerned about.
Global warming is another environmental issue that has both social and economic recognition today. As a nation, we have acknowledged the effects of atmospheric pollution as a result of transportation – too much pollution from vehicle emissions have affected the quality of air. Consequently, Earth cannot sustain itself without some sort of intervention, thus causing warming waters and rising sea levels. The effects of this can be felt all over the Earth. Some smaller countries are in jeopardy of losing their nations to the sea, while declining fish stocks and marine life can no longer breed and survive in these warmer waters as their food sources are limited within a given circumstance. The Sierra Club, one of the oldest and well-known environmental organizations, encourages solutions to global warming. The Sierra Club’s mission is to educate and practice “responsible use of the Earth’s resources.” By controlling economic uses of the Earth’s resources, we are not only contributing in bettering current environment situations, but are also saving money by utilizing eco-efficient products and services. We not only save money in the short time, but also in the long term effects, because if change does not occur, when resources become scarce, prices will rise dramatically – affecting both middle and lower classes.
Economic levels include major-scale measures, but actually, there are smaller ways that come together and make a bigger difference – through the change of everyday economic lifestyles of families and individuals. Our refrigerators account for 20% of electricity used within our household. Making sure that both the energy saver switch is on and that the temperature is turned down is a great way to reduce our consumption of energy. Our washing machines should be washed on cold and warm settings, not hot. The dishwasher should be full when you run it, and if available, the energy saving setting should be enabled. Turning down your water heater thermostat is another available option. However, the most important step is re ...

My best friends while growing up, Adam, Eric, and Ryan were the children of a Vietnamese woman, Ky Nguyen-Fortune, who had moved to the United States with her White husband, Richard. Not long after the birth of her third child, Richard died of complications from an injury he had sustained in the Vietnam War. Ky met a man of Vietnamese heritage, Minh Do, living in a nearby city after Richard’s death, and soon afterward, they married (K. Do, personal communication, May 9, 2008).
Adam, Eric, and Ryan grew up living with the idea that they represented a model minority. Ky never did much to discount the idea, as she was constantly berating her children for bringing home anything but As on their assignments. She may have reinforced the idea of the model minority, but should everyone not expect their children work hard in school?
Asian Americans share similar facial features and a tendency toward dark-colored eyes and hair. Skin tones of Asian Americans are all very similar. As yet, I have not seen an overweight Asian American in Coshocton. It would be safe to say that in this town, Asian Americans are healthy and fit. This probably stems from similar diets consisting of rice, pork, and vegetables. Their individual work ethics may also contribute to this, as an active lifestyle leads to healthy bodies.
Coshocton seems to be quite the racist town. Perhaps this is because of the low minority population, but I have grown up with intolerance in Coshocton. In grade school, there was a set of African American twins named Eddie and Edrina. They each put up with racial slurs from other students throughout their academic careers. Because of a lack of social organizations aimed at the interests of African Americans, and ...
