The candles in the background showed a more intimate atmosphere when they kissed. Their intense kissing also showed how lustful feelings overpowered being scared or afraid of being caught. This could have also shown disrespect to their parents at the time, for they were not willing to control their sexual urges during an important party which Juliet's parents were hosting.
Costuming could be portrayed differently in this scene than the modernized version. Juliet wore a long, flowing red gown. There was sequencing along the sleeves of her dress, and the type of dress was seen as very royal and outrageous. Her hair was neatly parted in the middle and pulled back into a low pony tail.
