Preview: ... at has two roots at x = 1:

(x-1)(x-1) = 0.

Day 4 - Quadratic equations can be solved by graphing, using the quadratic formula, completing the square, and factoring. What are the pros and cons of each of these methods? When might each method be most appropriate? Which method do you prefer? Why?

The single most sure and easy way to solve them is using the quadratic formula. Just substituting, does a bit of arithmetic and you are done. Its main downside is that sometimes the answer can be seen a little more quickly with factoring. When using the quadratic formula the Pros give solutions to any quadratic equation, whether the coefficients are complex numbers or the roots are complex will provide exact answers. The Cons are that it can be a long process. Without the knowledge of complex numbers it is difficult to realize the importance of the quadratic formula. Most people usually fail to appreciate the + - factor so if the equation is not used with care you can easily obtain the wrong answer.

Factoring is second best. Some quadratics have factors that just jump out at you, but the best part about factoring is that when they do just jump out at you, most people kind of feel they got the answer without doing the work. For that reason it doesn't seem as hard as using the quadratic formula and doing the small amount of arithmetic does. We all like the feeling of easy. Its main downfall is that outside of tests and homework, the world is filled with quadratic formula's that are very hard to factor.

Completing the square is fairly pointless as it is harder than just using the quadratic formula. It's error-prone because you have to remember several steps and get them right. I think it is pretty pointless, and it is kind of just a specialized factoring approach. Completing the square has Pros because it has a quick and reliable method to find the answers to the quadratic equations. It can provide the exact answers. This is the method which leads to the quadratic formula so it is essentially just as useful. The Cons are that it is not the best method if the coefficients are fractions because this makes the work a lot harder.

In actuality, all three are factoring: obviously for the "factoring" approach, a special set of techniques to produce the completing the square method (so you factor a square rather than a "messy" quadratic), and the quadratic formula is a factoring technique that's already worked out for you and you just substitute values into it. So, in a way, all three are factoring so factoring should get some kudos even when you just use the quadratic formula.

Graphing is my last resort. It is handy for when you have little to work with or just need an approximate answer. You see, anything drawn is necessarily inexact, so graphing cannot produce accurate results except in your imagination. The imagined "accurate" results might match the correct answer but in the same way that ...
