This probably stems from similar diets consisting of rice, pork, and vegetables. Their individual work ethics may also contribute to this, as an active lifestyle leads to healthy bodies.<br>Coshocton seems to be quite the racist town. Perhaps this is because of the low minority population, but I have grown up with intolerance in Coshocton. In grade school, there was a set of African American twins named Eddie and Edrina. They each put up with racial slurs from other students throughout their academic careers. Because of a lack of social organizations aimed at the interests of African Americans, and perhaps because of racial intolerance in the community, Eddie and Edrina moved out of Coshocton within weeks of graduating from high school. They took up residence in Columbus, Ohio because of a higher percentage of African Americans in the community, and therefore a higher chance of obtaining well-paying jobs (E. Toney, personal communication, May 10, 2008).<br>As I have mentioned, there is a lack of minority interest groups in Coshocton. While it is touted that members of any minority group are more than welcome to join social organizations like 4H, Boy and Girl Scouts, Relay for Life, and the Homeowners Association, there is absolutely no minority participation in these groups.<br>Leaders in the community profess to treat people from all walks of life equally, as I would have expected them to do. In personal communications with Mayor Steven D. Mercer and Safety Service Director Jerry Stenner (May 6, 2008), community leaders have expressed concern for low minority participation in the social structure for years. The mosaic was created using the handprints of grade school children from our local school. All of their different skin tones, from pale peach, to tan, to olive, to ebony and more are represented. At the bottom of the mural is the statement, "Everyone is Welcome!" Our neighborhood association is also involved in our current Mayor's Race and Social Justice Initiative. The aims of the initiative are making civic organizations and businesses more inclusive, eliminating institutional racism, and "reducing racial disproportionality in education, public safety, economic development, citizen engagement, public health and the environment (Bronstein, 2003)."<br> The motto, "Everyone is Welcome!" is also evident in our schools today, where rather than the informal segregation which is commonplace in certain other cities, Seattle schools are generally a representative blend of the population. This was not always the case, but is largely due to a difficult conversation between families, education officials, and civil rights groups which took place several years ago over charges of institutionalized racism in the public school system. This conversation led to a transformational 2004 resolution based upon the landmark Supreme Court case of Brown versus The Board of Education. While that case revolved specifically around discrimination against and segregation of African American students, the Seattle resolution took a much broader approach, working to end discrimination based not only on race, but culture, economic status, disability, and gender (Seattle Public Schools, 2004). <br> My own experience in the Seattle public school system was remarkably free of racist or biased behavior by my peers or teachers.
